Show and Tell Friday

Kelli, at There is No Place Like Home, is hosting Show and Tell Friday...My Show and Tell today is...my antique purses..
I got the one above about 30 years ago at a thrift store in Provo, Utah. I routinely found antique items back then at this one particular store (not so much anymore).
The bead work is very lovely.
This purse was given to me by my sister, Jeanie, who knows my affinity for very feminine things and for pastel colors.
The beadwork on this bag is much more intricate.

I love to wonder about the ladies who carried these bags before me. Were they in the bloom of youth or were they older ladies like I am now? Did they make a special memory, meet a special someone, while holding them? Did they pack them for travel and visit some far-away place with them? Did these purses ever hold hankerchiefs that dried a tear or were given to someone as a remembrance?

I, myself, carried both of these purses in the bloom of my young womanhood. I held the flowered one in my lap when I went to the ballet to see the Bolshoi and another time, the Kirov. They went on special dates with me when I felt young and beautiful. Now, they grace my bedroom wall, now that I am older and rarely dress up the way I use to. Someday, I will pass them down to my daughter, while she is a young woman. Hopefully, they will help her to feel feminine and pretty, because beautiful things affect the way we feel about ourselves.

Love,
Elizabeth

They are very pretty and I'm sure there is some history behind them. You should dress up and go somewhere fancy and use them.
Keep us posted if you do.

Wow - these are simply gorgeous!

One thing I would suggest, if I might. Write down what you told us, the history behind these, and tuck them inside. One day when your daughter 'inherits' them, she will have all the info too - you know how stuff gets lost along the way. You might even write a love note to your daughter an tuck inside too.

I got this idea from my mother in law - she had several pieces of china and treasures of my husbands that were meant to be passed to him upon her passing, but she's given them to us ahead of time so she can SEE us enjoy them. Tucked inside each item was a history behind them. In fact, in the silver set she gave me were some newspaper articles of my husband as a boy and also some of his old report cards LOL! These notes are as much a treasure as the items.

So, upon doing this, your daughter would not have to wonder the history YOU had with the items, but still might wonder, like you did, the 'lost' owners who had them before you.

I really enjoyed seeing your 'treasures.

Those are both gorgeous, but as a floral pastel girl I especially love the second one. They must have been used primarily for special occasions to have lasted so long. Mine get worn out! But I don't have any that nice.

This is a lovely, reflective post. I think you are still beautiful in your own special way. We all are. I'm glad you have such wonderful little purses and that your daughter will love them too.

I wish ladies still used those beaded purses. I love them as well. I remember the satin purse with the metal alligator snap closure, just small enough for lipstick and a compact.

You have the greatest treasures!

Hey Elizabeth...I haven't been by for so long....and look at you...You have a huge readership. I love your post today. I myself do not have an affinity to feminine things as I am such a tomboy...grin. But I can sure appreciate your eye for beauty and see it in these purses. Come over and see what I found...see...you taught me to do? Now I have trained myself to go in a store and stay very still...letting my eyes wander and I am beginning to spot treasures.
