Why?

Dear Friends and Visitors,

I intended to write a Happy Spring post today, but my heart is a little heavy after attending a funeral this morning for the daughter of my husband's close friend.  She was murdered last week (The story is HERE).  She was only 24 years old and the mother of two small children.  She was seeking a divorce from her husband.  He was very angry and so when she went to pick up the children from him one day last week, he shot her during an argument.  Today, as I stood looking at the body of this young woman in her casket, I just kept asking, "Why?!"

Why?

A death from an accident or illness for one so young is sad, but understandable.

The murder of a beautiful young girl at the hands of someone who once promised to love and protect her is incomprehensible but becoming all too common.

Fortunately, my husband's friends have a strong faith in God and that faith is sustaining them in a way that is very inspiring to others.  They will be raising the two grandchildren.  Their youngest son, who is still at home, is now calling them his brother and sister.

Why is it that increasingly people are settling their differences with violent acts?  How could this young man honestly feel that murdering his wife, the mother of his young children, would solve anything?  We cannot ask him any of these questions, because he is dead, too.  After killing his wife, he turned the gun on himself.

Two families are now grieving two deaths and two children have lost their parents.

Why?

Love,
Elizabeth

2 Corinthians 1:3-5
Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, 4who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God. 5For just as the sufferings of Christ flow over into our lives, so also through Christ our comfort overflows.

I have a great amount of empathy for this family. April 1st marks the eighth month of my brother-in-law's kidnapping. We do not know if he is dead or alive. All we know is that he was one of the many victims of the rising drug problem in Mexico.

God has given us a great deal of comfort during this time. Sometimes it comes through our wonderful friends, and other times it comes through blogs offering eggless pumpkin bread recipes and beautiful background music!

This made my blood run cold. Not just because it is such a terrible tragedy but because I just heard about this from the young woman's brother who is serving a mission (and currently in our branch) here, and loved by all, I might add. What a small, and sometimes very sad, world. Reading about this on your blog made it feel even closer to home for some reason. My prayers are with them.

I don't know you, Elizabeth or this tragic family but when I read this I had to send my prayers and condolence to you, this family and the two children. Mindless acts are too hard for ordinary people to grasp. Thank God for the grandparents. May their lovely daughter rest in peace.
